The Serengeti Girls Run
Students in Tanzania

AFRICA - Singita and the Serengeti Girls Run

Across Africa, Singita is renowned for its luxury lodges and unmatched safari experiences, but their commitment to excellence extends deep into the communities and environments in which they operate. One example of their impactful initiatives is the Serengeti Girls Run. Held annually, the multi-stage, all-women run sees runners traversing 63km in three days across the pristine wilderness of Singita Grumeti’s private concession in the Serengeti – home to an abundance of wildlife and a unique ecosystem. This incredible event is part of Singita and the Grumeti Fund’s ‘Safaris with a Purpose’ and brings together local girls and international participants to raise funds for crucial empowerment programmes for girls in rural Tanzania:

  • Scholarships for 80 local girls, covering costs for secondary school, vocational studies, and university education.
  • Empowerment events reaching 5,000 high school girls, providing inspiration, motivation, and career guidance.
  • A year’s supply of sanitary towels for 5,000 high school girls, ensuring they can attend school with dignity and confidence.
  • A mentorship program pairing students with mentors who provide guidance and support.
  • Life skills training to equip young women with the knowledge and tools to succeed in school and beyond.

The event is much more than just a run; it is a catalyst for change, and this year we are especially proud that Jigsaw Travel’s Managing Director, Rachelle Matheson, will be taking it on. With just a few weeks to go,  Rachelle has been training hard, working through set backs and is now looking forward to competing with the 15 other women participating and seeing first hand the life changing impact Singita is having on the young girls of Tanzania. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed to our fundraising and supported Rachelle during her training.

And if you are not  quite up for running 63km, remember just by visiting Singita’s lodges, you directly support these initiatives, ensuring that your travel leaves a lasting impact on the local communities.

SUMBA, INDONESIA: NIHI Sumba and Cap Karoso

Sumba, Indonesia, is an island of breathtaking natural beauty, but it is also a place where many communities face significant challenges. NIHI Sumba Resort and Cap Karoso are working to change that through community-based programs that support local education, healthcare, and economic development.

NIHI Sumba Resort partners closely with the Sumba Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of the local Sumbanese people. The Foundation’s work spans several critical areas:

  • Clean Water Access: Installing wells and water stations in remote villages, ensuring that communities have access to safe drinking water.
  • Malaria Prevention: Providing health education, mosquito nets, and medical care to reduce malaria transmission rates.
  • Medical Clinics: Offering essential healthcare services and nutritional programs for malnourished children.
  • Education Programs: Supporting local schools with resources and materials, improving the quality of education for Sumbanese children.

In addition, NIHI Sumba runs a hospitality training program, offering local residents the chance to learn valuable skills in the tourism industry. Trainees gain hands-on experience working at the resort, opening up new opportunities for employment and economic self-sufficiency. Guests at NIHI Sumba are invited to visit the Foundation’s projects, engage with the local community, and see how their stay contributes directly to these impactful programs.

Cap Karoso’s Farming School is another initiative making a difference on the island. The school teaches locals skills in landscaping, organic farming, plant care, and permaculture. By sharing these skills, Cap Karoso is helping locals develop sustainable agricultural practices that they can use on their own land, creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout the region. Guests staying at Cap Karoso can tour the farm, learn about the training program, and even participate in workshops.
